WEMORIES: a memory map of West Edmonton Mall

$14.00 - $30.00

For mall aficionados everywhere!

What have we all been up to at West Edmonton Mall over the past forty-plus years? It’s a very Edmonton question, and as it turns out, we’ve been up to a lot.

When the doors were thrown open in September 1981, West Edmonton Mall instantly became an undeniable part of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada’s cultural fabric. Since then, generations of visitors to one of the biggest shopping malls on Earth have felt the heat of the fire-breathing dragon, watched the Oilers practice at the Ice Palace, and checked out haunted houses and Rock ‘n’ Ride They’ve snuck away to get piercings on school field trips and spotted Garth Brooks.

You’ll find coming-of-age stories, hijinks, immigrant stories, history you didn’t even know happened, and one truly epic submarine captain’s tale. Edmontonian stories at West Edmonton Mall are a real slice of life.

The memories in this map were crowdsourced as part of THE MALL exhibition at the Mitchell Art Gallery. Names of contributors, and the approximate years when the memories took place, are included where provided. Thank you to everyone who shared a memory. Concept, compilation and design by Vikki Wiercinski.
